About Sangiovese di Romagna

Toscana is not the only region where Sangiovese thrives – Romagna is the home of dozens of excellent wines made from the grape.

Sangiovese is planted all over the Emilia-Romagna region. Like its brother from Toscana, Sangiovese di Romagna has many clones and produces a range of wines from IGT table wines to very fine DOC wines.

Viticulturists have worked hard to produce new high quality clones (R24 & T19).

Sangiovese di Romagna adapts to different soil types. It produces rich, full bodied and tannic wines in the provinces of Forlì and Ravenna, and light, fruity wines in the western and eastern regions near Bologna and Marche.

The grape produces the highest quality wine in the sandstone and clay hills south of the Via Emilia near the Apennines, which coveres the Sangiovese di Romagna DOC zone, where the higher summer temperature gives more opportunity for Sangiovese to ripen.

The Sangiovese di Romagna DOC zone includes over 7000 hectares that produces over 130,000 hl of wine each year.
